Edinburgh is an amazing place. It’s filled with so much character, home to the biggest arts festival in the world, its where Harry Potter was written & Outlander was filmed, home to some of the most beautiful buildings you’ve ever seen.
Craigmillar Castle is one of those buildings.
Ruby’s last school project was all about castles and ruins, sparking her interest in Scotland and its history, so we invested in a family Historic Scotland pass and can’t wait to visit all the historical sites, so far we’ve visited 3 we normally would have overlooked and gone to the beach instead, and its been such lovely change.
Home to Mary Queen of Scots and more recently Outlander Season 3 (hello all you Outlander fans! It’s full of charm, has stunning views of Edinburgh & Fife and is only 10 minutes around the corner from our house.
I’m not sure why its taken us so long to visit. But we are oh so glad we did.
The moment you enter the courtyard your met with the most stunning sycamore tree’s, said to be planted by Mary, Queen of Scot’s, making the inside of the castle look like a fairy tale. You can just imagine how beautiful this would be during a wedding, with string lights and guests dancing under the open sky.
We played hide and seek and wandered up and down the stairwells into rooms until we were back where we started, or lost. Again.
We had sword fights, searched for dragons and tried to imagine what it would have been like to lived there all those years ago, what the rooms would have been like, what would have been hanging on the walls. The place is magnificent.
It’s a castle you can spend hours and hours in and the kids didn’t want to leave. I didn’t either. We plan on coming back to this one a lot, with picnics in the summer, much better than the kids complaining that theres still sand in their butt and shoes.
I love that no matter where we go these guys stay close. They hold hands and guide each other up stairs. They stop if we lose someone round a corner and get so excited to show each other what they’ve found when discovering new places. We settled at the top and admired the view, we are so incredibly lucky to live in such a beautiful town. And while I get total #FOMO (fear of missing out) that I don’t live closer to London and miss out on quite a lot of the cool events, I could never swap it….
We would like to say a special thank you to Boden for the lovely clothing the kids wore today. We received so many compliments on their bright and beautiful outfits. The entire Mini Boden section is stuff of Instagram Dreams and we could have filled our basket a million times over.
FYI the duck cardigan needs to come in adult sizes! It my favorite piece of clothing any of my children have ever owned. Ever.
Thank you for having us and we can’t wait to work with you guys again some day!
ZOE, what GORGEOUS images! I can’t believe that you are so lucky as to live so close to a real, actual castle – I am tremendously jealous. The outfits are amazing too. We adore Boden in our house, and your children wear these clothes so well – you made some great choices! I think we need to go ahead and buy that duck cardie for ourselves, it’s gorgeous!
