One of the best things about being an adult is being able to eat ice cream. Ā When ever you like. Ā You can even order it as a starter if you fancy and sometimes I do. Ā As a family we love stopping by a new place, finding the best spots and some new ones. Ā We take ice cream pretty seriously around here and we wanted to share our favourite spots with you.
Mary’s Milk Bar – The Grassmarket.
If you haven’t heard of Marys Milk Bar by now, then where on earth have you been? Ā It is filled with classic flavours of gelato and then some completely obscure but delicious ones, like mince pie, goats cheese & plum or one of my favourites Tea and Jam. Ā They even have a signature Milk flavour and its lush! Ā TheyĀ sit right at the bottom of the Grassmarket with a pretty nice view of the castle, it’s a bit of an instagram hot spot, its become something of a hit with tourists and in the summer the queues can get a little bit crazy and zigzag all the way up the street during the festival. Ā But I promise its always worth it!
S. Lucas Ice CreamĀ – Musselburgh.
This place is right at the end of the highstreet in Musselburgh (also Morningside) – Lucas was always a favourite of ours as kids and our parents before us, its been around since 1908! Ā While the interior could be doing with a bit of an update and the seating arrangements could be improved, it can get a bit squishy, but the ice cream is delicious and you never have to wait too long to be seated! Ā They classic Vanilla is dreamy, or you can go for something more fun like Scottish Irn Bru sorbet, Biscoff or cherry greek yoghurt. Ā You could go for days and never get the same flavour twice.
KaspasĀ – Gorgie.
Georgie’s not a place we go often as its miles on the other side of town, but thought we would give it a bash last week. Ā We were not disappointed.Ā Ā If you ever wanted a full menu of sundaes, crepes, waffles or hot cookies with a dollop of ice cream, this is your place. Ā Its not far from The City Farm, so could be a great little treat after seeing the animals. Ā We kind of wish we had visited a little sooner and will be back as often as we can over the summer. It’s a thumbs up from Lucy!
The Beach HouseĀ –Ā Portobello Promenade.
This was our ice cream hot spot last year. Ā We would jump in the car after dinner, get a big scoop of sorbet and sit on the wall outside because the tables inside were jam packed. Ā TheĀ sorbets are vegan friendly and this was one of our favourites when the twins were little, their milk intolerance was a little tough to manage and these guys always had a pretty big dairy free option, the Green Apple sorbet is delicious!
Moo Pie Gelato, St Mary Street, Edinburgh.
The Royal Mile is a favourite walk of ours, with or without the kids. Ā Moo Pie Gelatos is tucked away down the bottom of St Mary’s Street. They have small batches of flavours and have different each week, and not just gelato, stuffed donuts & affagato too. Ā It’s a lovely wee stop not he way around town, no matter if it’s raining or not.Ā
Open Wed-Sun.Ā
Got one to add to the list? Ā We are slowly making our way around Edinburgh and would love to know if you have a favourite spot too, one we’ve missed. Ā Or if you’ve been to one of our favourites!

I know you’ve already got one in Portobello, but we love Monny’s too, just off the High Street on Brighton Place. Lots of lovely flavours – trifle, elderflower and pomegranate and Monny’s fantasy, among others.

Love your posts and need to take my kids to one of these little spots?
