Each year people wait in anticipation for the John Lewis Christmas advert to appear on our tellies. Usually aired on a Friday night when everyone is snuggled up and settled for the evening, cuppa in hand, we wait on the tear jerker that sets off the festive season and gets everyone feeling a christmassy and a little more loving.
Not this year. Not for me anyway. Aired at 8am on a Thursday morning, while trying to get 4 kids ready to do the school run in the rain, it just felt weird.
A boxer dog jumping on a trampoline, that half the wildlife used in the night. Cute? I’m not really sure. I might just be completely jealous of the fact he is on the trampoline, after 4 kids I’m still a little scared to look at one. And the music? I’m not sure it tied in with it either. Maybe ‘Jump Around’ by House of Pain would have suited it a little better. Where’s the sentiment, the hidden message and the tear jerker that leaves you feeling like you need to go and change a little bit of the world. Theres a very hidden message about wildlife and fox protection, but doesn’t come across as clearly as it maybe should have, maybe the foxes should have been the stars.
The Bear and the Hare, Always a Woman & Sweet Child O’ Mine were a few of my favorites from past years, not forgetting Monty the penguin and the Man on the Moon.
They clearly showed how life passes by so quickly and before you know it, your kids are all grown up. A lonely elderly neighbour, we should all invite for lunch and check on more or the simple need of some love & friendship during the festive season.
On the plus side, it’s made a few giggle in a world that the majority feels is falling apart with recent news headlines. I feel like it lacked the usual John Lewis sparkle and could have been so much better. And dare I say, I preferred the A level students advert that was accidentally mistaken for the John Lewis one, maybe he should get the £7m budget to create one next year?
I’d love to know what you think, did you like it? Or not? Let me know in the comments below.
Have a wonderful weekend!
P.s I still love John Lewis! *holds out hope for next years advert*
